Formation: A Sculptural and Sophisticated Cabinet by Oliver Bowien

A Unique and Functional Design with Artistic Flair

The inspiration for the Formation Cabinet came from a set of nine components that were initially created for a different purpose. Oliver Bowien took these elements and added different shapes and forms to give each component its own identity. The goal was to combine these elements in a way that creates harmony and cohesiveness, resulting in a truly remarkable design.

What sets the Formation Cabinet apart is its versatility. It can serve as a bedroom chest, a sideboard, or even an entertainment unit. The cabinet features five doors and two drawers, each mantled in goatskin and opening in different directions, some in truly unique ways. The encasement is finished in a hand-polished gloss crystal resin, adding a touch of elegance to the design. The solid metal legs, plated in polished nickel, further enhance the sculptural aspect of the piece.

The Formation Cabinet is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. The doors and drawers open and close with softly self-closing mechanisms, providing a pleasant and sophisticated experience. Additionally, the cabinet includes a secret compartment, perfect for storing personal belongings.

Creating the Formation Cabinet required a combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology. The design was initially created using design and rendering software, allowing for precise 1:1 templates. The components were then manufactured and assembled by hand. The legs, which are a defining feature of the design, were first hand-shaped from wood in a free-style hand sculpturing manner. Wooden prototypes were then used to create molds, and the final legs were cast in brass with a nickel-plating.

With dimensions of W 152cm x D 43cm x H 106cm, the Formation Cabinet is a statement piece that demands attention in any room. Its unique shape, luxurious materials, and functional design make it a true work of art.
